A bit belated, but the earthquake/tsunami in Japan looks like it'll be the headline of the month. So far a few hundred confirmed dead from what I'm hearing.
Seems that Hawaii avoided the worst of the Tsunami. I'm hearing from some translators on another site that the Japanese are worried that one of their nuclear power plants may have been critically damaged during the event.

Yep, I was pretty worried as I have a friend who lives near tokyo. Initially I heard from him, not long after the quake. He was walking home as all the trains were busted. About 6 hours later I got this message from him once he got home, it speaks for itself.
"Now I am at home. It is really disaster. Everything was gone. And still, there are some earthquake."

According to some of my christian friends, the end time is coming and this event just confirmed what they where thinking...for them.
Its shocking the amount of damage it can do to such a MEDC country like Japan.

i found this stats in the newspaper,.. of the largest earthquakes since 1900 - - - (Location) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - (year) - - (magnitude) - - (casulties) 1) Valdivia, Chile - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -1960 - - - 9.5 - - - - - 2231 to 6000 2) Prince William Sound, Alaska - - - - - - - - - - - - -1964 - - - 9.2 - - - - - -143 3 off the West Coast of Northern Sumatra - - - - - - -2004 - - - 9.1 - - - -230210 to 350000 4) Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia - - - - - - - - - - - - -1952 - - - 9.0 - - - - - -zero 5) off the East Coast of Honshu, Japan - - - - - - - -2011 - - - 8.9 - - - - - 8000 to 25000 6) offshore Maule, Chile - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 2010 - - - 8.8 - - - - - -521 7) off the West Coast of Ecuador - - - - - - - - - - - -1906 - - - 8.8 - - - - - 1100 8) Rat Islands, Alaska - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 1965 - - - 8.7 - - - - - -zero 9) Northern Sumatra, Indonesia - - - - - - - - - - - - -2005 - - - 8.6 - - - - - 1346 10) Assam Plateau Tibet, China - - - - - - - - - - - - -1950 - - - 8.6 - - - - - 1526
damage/casulties all depend on how populated and how developed an area is. this particular earthquake in Japan didn't kill too many people (compared to the Sumatra 2004), partly cause Japan has some of the toughest building codes; so their structure doesnt crumble. just really unfortunate that some people got swept away by the waves. one thing is for certain though; avoid living around the rim of the Pacific (ring of fire) unless you are in Australia.

Was playing some COD4 today with a mate from NZ. He normally kicks everyones ass but he stopped dead for a minute today then told me they just had another quake. His guess was a 4.9 just from experience, he was close it was a 5.1.
It's amazing that this can happen in some places and we don't even know, he was so shaken himself after it for a while so it really does impact on them a lot.
I mean, the biggest tremor I have even fealt was less than the cane trucks driving by at night times when I was a kid.

My area gets quakes once in a while (about twice a decade, we're not on a major fault line). However, the worst we get is in the 2 range. You barely feel anything and it's gone. I can't even imagine what a major quake is like. I see images and video on tv and it seems more like movie special effects than reality. :-(
