To my knowledge this glitch is not considered "bugsing".
It has recently come to my attention through a post on the game's official forum, and through subsequent testing, that the heavy fighter is quite useful in expeditions.
Rather than recognizing the ship's structural integrity as 10,000(base) the game mistakes it for 100,000 in expeditions. This little bug makes it possible for large amounts of ships to be discovered by a rather small amount of fighters.
The only drawback would be that if your fighters encounter enemies, they will be wiped out if the game see's them at 10x their actual value. Still, if you can spare a few, this may be something to experiment with. I don't doubt that once this information gets around, Gameforge will do something about it eventually...

weird.... Seems like an easy fix though, just a typo in the code...
Do you have a reference for it not being illegal usage of bugs?

::edit:: Just to make sure I asked on the board and sent in a ticket. I'm fairly certain it's not illegal, as if it were everyone who's ever sent heavy fighters on expeditions would be in for it. Still, I'll post here whatever answers I get...

Just to be clear, does the game recognize 10 times the number of heavy fighters, or does the game recognize heavy fighters as being 10 times harder to kill? Your post isn't very clear to me...
Also: sending bombers on expeditions gives you a chance to find and bring back every ship up to and including destroyers. The best ship you can find bring back with heavy fighters are cruisers.

In expeditions the reward isn't determined by ship numbers per say, but by the total combined structural integrity of the ships you send. The structural integrity the game thinks the heavy fighter has, as stated, is about 100,000. That means sending 3 heavy fighters will have the same SI as 2 bombers. (Much cheaper than loosing 2 bombers if killed, only 18,000 metal and 12,000 crystal)
Speaking of bombers, I'm glad you mentioned that, I forgot about them. I'll be testing this tomorrow; sending a good bunch of heavy fighters, say, 30, to equal 3,000,000 SI, plus one bomber. My theory here is to have the bomber unlock the other available ships, while the heavy fighters add the necessary SI, and if killed the losses won't be anywhere near what may be lost by sending masses of cargoes/battleships, etc etc.
Though, even straight heavy fighters have shown to bring back goodies. Recently, a half dozen cruisers, 30 small cargoes, and 10 heavy fighters found in one mission.

Based on this expeditions calculator it looks like you have a sound theory. I hope it works out the way you hope, because that means good news for the rest of us! ;D
