Well, recently I've noticed that there has been a bit of a downturn in Andromeda's number of players. In light of this, I've decided to keep track of the number of players in the universe for a month.
I'll be adding the number of players taken once per day(or when I can remember to at least) between 2:00 pm and 6:00 pm eastern time, and at the end of the month I'll compile everything into a nice little line graph.
4/1/2010- 7,099
4/2/2010- 6,998 Note:: This is not good...
4/5/2010- 7,029
4/7/2010- 6,940
4/9/2010- 6,903
4/11/2010- 6,897
4/12/2010- 6,871
4/13/2010- 6,847
4/15/2010- 6,841
4/16/2010- 6,837
4/17/2010- 6,826
4/19/2010- 6,740
4/20/2010- 6,769
4/21/2010- 6,718
4/23/2010- 6,725

The way I averaged things out we're still losing a net of 35-45 players per week. May level out around 4,000 but that's not counting the inactives/v-mode players.
Gemeni looks like it's already bleeding out with the release of Hydra so soon after the former.

they planning to release many more server i think,.. (Hydra, Io, Jupiter, ... Zagadra) so this downward trend will probably continue for some time,.. it's like building more houses than there are people to live in. but i think, ultimately, Andromeda has an advantage for being the first server on the list; new players tend to join the first server cause they don't know the difference; or atleast that's how i joined this server.
plus it's easier to login to Andromeda, because you don't have to select the server from the drop-down-list. so all servers are going to grow inactive, unless they stop building new servers,.. there's nothing we can do,.. except to be perhaps more proactive in recruiting members to the alliance?

When I started playing, I was 8500th on the list... More than half of players left

About the same here, I can remember when I ranked in the 7000's. Player base is still trickling down slowly, but not as bad as Barym, Capella, or Draco. Last I saw, Capella was in the 2000's.
Numbered unis are the worst though, I joined uni 23 for the hell of it, and there are only 400 accounts, and of those maybe 30 active players left.

4,640 - 6th November 2010 i think the server is losing a substaintial amount of players every week,.. the point where Groza claimed that there used to be >8500 players a year ago, suggest that there was a huge influx of players when the server was opened; and not a great deal of players joined since then.
suppose the number of quiters (each week) is a %proportion of the total server population and assume that the number of new players each week is insignificant but constant,..
then eventually we may hit some equilibrium; where player loss decreases over time as total player count becomes less. who knows,.. Andromeda may end up with one or two thousand players and stay there but that's only assuming there are new players joining and staying, and that "ogame" is competitive with other browser games out there,..

haha I've noticed this as well.
Only because my rank keeps climbing and I am doing virtually nothing. Went from over 1000 in rank to bout 930 now without doin any more than just building a few mines and some turtling.
The other thing that I have noticed is that there are still inactive planets from when I have started 10 months ago that are still there inactive, and haven't logged in at all.

Dark Matter buyers. There's some oddball German law that prevents GF from removing them from the game, citing that because they bought the in-game currency they cannot be removed until they have expended all of it.

well, in that case, i guess even the current player count is misleading i really don't like some of these darkmatter buyers, they dont get deleted and they occupy some of the best planet slots which i could have colonized

We're roughly even with most of the named servers now. The dark matter buyers are fairly annoying, and the consensus staunchly favors removing them, but GF says that unless some loophole is found nothing will be done about them.

4055 March-1-2011 just thought i should post the number cause it is about to drop below the 4000 margin seemed, players numbers had stablized somewhat around 4200 for a couple of months but falling to 4000s from 4200s within the last seven days is something to be alarmed about i've uploaded a time-line-graph of the player count in Universe101(Andromeda) i started playing OGame in late August, so there's data from early September onwards player count for April and May last year are sourced from Markas Aquinas' post above the trend of decline does seem to slowdown dradually, which was what we want to see however, significant drop from Feb-11 to Mar-11 could potientically affect the overall trend
